The Racoon

Raccoons are greedy omnivorous mammals who eat almost everything!

Wooded areas near rivers are its preferred habitat, but they are very adaptable to urban and residential areas. Small aquatic animals, small mammals, eggs, fruits, nuts, etc. are just as some of the foods consumed by raccoons. Their diet varies seasonally, spring is rather carnivorous while in the summer they are more vegetarian!

Did you know that its mask and striped tail are its most characteristic features. The female usually gives birth during April or May and has a litter of 2 to 5 kits. After their birth, baby raccoons remain with their mothers for almost an entire year.

Most raccoons received at Refuge Pageau are orphans. The species is very present in inhabited environments and often takes advantage of human infrastructure to take up residence and have their young. It is when the mother is captured and moved without its litter or worst trapped that the problem occurs. It is very important, when we have a bothersome nest at home, that we make sure to move the whole family at once to avoid orphans!
