Passerine birds are the largest group of birds as they contain the largest number of species. Each species has its own cry or song. They have 4 toes on each foot, 3 on the front & 1 on the rear allowing it to perch.

At the Refuge Pageau each year, we receive many orphaned chicks. They are admitted for several reasons for example, they have been found on the ground, when their nest has been destroyed or their parents have killed by a cat for example. Sometimes it is difficult to know how to react when we find a chick or fledgling?

To prevent cats from hurting birds, there is a simple solution. The strength of a cat’s hunting ability is silence. By placing a bell on its collar we reduce the chances of the cat succeeding in its hunt. After all, they don’t need to hunt to survive if we feed them enough!
