The Porcupine is essentially a nocturnal animal. It slows down during winter but does not hibernate unlike the marmot for example. Instead, it will remain in a restricted area surrounding its shelter, but come out during warm spells to feed

The porcupine is an herbivore that feeds on leaves, branches and bark. The female porcupine gives birth to one baby at a time, rarely 2! When they are born, small porcupines already have quills and their eyes open. Do not worry for mom, quills are soft at birth and harden after contact with the air within hours after birth.

Did you know that contrary to popular belief the porcupine does not throw its quills!

Its quills are actually like hairs. They are a defence mechanism, the porcupine is a slow animal, & cannot escape easily. It prefers to escape rather than face confrontation and will climb a tree to escape the attacker when the opportunity permits
